Scenario training is supposed to answer one question — what actually shows up when the attack is sudden, close, and ugly. The gear you train in either helps you answer that question or quietly gets in the way.
If the suit is too bulky, the role-player can't move like a person. The attack becomes choreography, and the student learns to beat choreography.
If the helmet muffles speech, the role-player can't talk. There's no verbal, no de-escalation, none of the pre-contact cues that precede most violence.
If the padding is too thick, the student knows the gear will protect them, and that changes how they think and move. The fear of impact is gone, and with it goes the mindset the drill was supposed to build.
And if the gear can't take real contact, nobody can train at the intensity the drill needs.
In 1980, Coach Tony Blauer developed a force-on-force drill called "The Panic Attack." The drill worked. The gear didn't. So he spent five years designing a suit from the ground up.

Impact Reduction Design — a message from Coach Tony BlauerIf your scenario gear is too bulky, it eliminates the 'fear' of impact. You need this to really develop the proper mindset. If your gear is too thick, it offers too much protection and you know that the gear will protect you. Again, this changes how you think and move. My thought process is that to learn to protect yourself, you must respect the danger. You will not be wearing a padded suit in a real confrontation! With this in mind, I spent 5-years (yes 5!) designing this suit. I tested various foams and plastics until I found the right styles, thickness, and configuration so that the gear transferred impact but also dispersed it. The result was a suit that let you know when you screwed up!
— Coach Tony Blauer
It was built around the role-player.
Most suits are designed to protect the person wearing them. HIGH GEAR® was built around the role-player's movement requirements, so the bad guy can replicate an actual attack in a real environment — and the student gets a real lesson.
Natural movement
Streamlined and ergonomic. The complete suit weighs 7.5 to 9.8 lbs depending on size — about half the weight of other training suits — and a role-player can suit up in three minutes.
Clear speech
The helmet's mouth and chin design lets role-players speak clearly, so scenarios include the verbal, the de-escalation, and the pre-contact cues that precede most violence.
Impact reduction, not impact elimination
Smart foams and molded plastics dissipate impact while still transmitting force to the wearer. You feel it when you make a mistake. That is the point.
Also built in
- Role-players can wear duty gear or clothing over the suit
- Train in real environments — rooms, halls, elevators, vehicles, buses
- Role-players can be flex-cuffed or handcuffed, so the fight closes like real life
- Works with any grappling, striking, or fighting system
- Sling or holster training weapons during force-on-force
- The MCR helmet is the only close-quarter helmet approved for Simunition, UTM, and Airsoft
HIGH GEAR® is the grappling mat you wear. You wouldn't train for wrestling, BJJ, or grappling on a concrete floor, would you? Of course not. Now you can practice in any environment.
It helps both the student and the role-player understand violence in a more visceral way. That is what teaches people to manage fear and stay focused on tactics that work under pressure.
True confidence is found inside drills like this.
This compilation shows actual training over the years, from personal defense to force-on-force CQB/SWAT scenarios. Note how natural and realistic the movement is. This is a critical aspect of the role-player training taught to our certified scenario trainers.
Special unit fully integrates SPEAR, HIGH GEAR® and scenario training. This video was made a year after Blauer Tactical ran the Singapore Police trainers through several custom courses, from SPEAR System® Essentials to our scenario training and PSD drills. If you understand the foundational principle of the SPEAR System® — fingers splayed, arms outside 90 — you'll see it used to counter every ambush in almost every contact drill.

Frank Mir working isolation drills with Coach Blauer before his fight with Nogueira. HIGH GEAR® was designed for police, military, and self-defense scenario training, and it has found its way into MMA with many of the world's top trainers.
From the people who run scenarios in it.
"Did the suit stop me from feeling all the punches and kicks? I wouldn't want it to, I want to know what punch is working and when a kick didn't hurt."
FC (Ret) Phil Crowley, CQB/Combative Instructor
"While each of the protective suits available on the market serve various purposes during training, when speed, intensity and realistic movement are required in the scenario, I prefer the HIGH GEAR suit."
Kenneth Murray, Armiger Police Training Institute
"We've been using the High Gear (4 sets) for the last two years in our Force Scenario Training here at the Academy. We've had great results and couldn't do the training and testing we have in place without it."
Officer Joe Engman, Control and Defensive Tactics Instructor
"All equipment that is strapped on a fighter has some limitations to it. We have found however that the HIGH GEAR allows the highest level of movement, with a minimum level of restriction and just the right amount of protection. We have 6 full suits and a few partial suits at our training academy and they are a great training tool."
Joe Mullings, The Armory
"It's lightweight, easy to put on and allows my team and I to train hard. I'm continuously impressed with how well it functions, regardless of if I'm striking or grappling, it protects without restricting movement."
Dave Kovar
"We just got and used the HIGH GEAR for our last in-house recruit training and it worked great."
Clay Fallis, Tallahassee Police Department
There is only one HIGH GEAR®.
HIGH GEAR® has been copied in three different countries. Copies do not carry the same warranty or the integrity of the original design, and they do not have Coach Tony Blauer standing behind them.
Every HIGH GEAR® suit is handcrafted in the United States, made to order, and Berry Compliant. It was designed by the man who pioneered impact-reduction gear, and it is backed by our warranty and our name.
If you want the suit the discipline was built on, buy the original.

“Experience is something you get shortly after you need it.”
Scenario training in HIGH GEAR® gives you that experience early — with a partner who can move, talk, and hit, and gear built so you feel the mistakes.
